We played a paper route song in Leogane, Haiti last Thursday to an uninterested crowd outside the world voodoo headquarters.
Hopefully we have more video to come where the crowds were actually involved. This was the last time we played in Haiti and here for the first time we faced real opposition to what we were doing. Most of this opposition probably came from the fact that we played right outside of the world voodoo headquarters. We were exhausted, this was the 11th time we played in 6 days, and we had just finished dominating some Haitians in basketball (it would have been the other way around if we played soccer). Most of the people outside of this voodoo temple in Leogane only wanted food or money, but we simply didn't have enough food or money to go around. We could not give these Haitians what they wanted or needed to survive in this life, but what we had was better. It is eternal not temporary. We were obedient to the Lord and shared with them all we could offer, music, and most importantly the gospel of Jesus Christ. These oppressed and beautiful Haitians are so much more patient than us in so many ways, but at the heart of who they are, they are the same. Many of these Haitian's situations are a lot more desperate than ours, but outside of Christ we are all in a desperate situation. Many of them have given up on Christ to make food or survival their god, while we have given up on Christ my making materialism and comfort our god. We are all seeking to satisfy our desires of the moment, giving up the eternal for a temporary fix. Only Jesus Christ can change us, only Jesus Christ can get us to God almighty. My Haitian brothers and sisters live and breathe this. They must rely on God to be the bread of life and living water, their money cannot feed or provide for them. I pray I can begin to rely on Christ for all I need as we all begin to fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen. For we know that what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
